Here is a list that I compiled of how we could introduce and reinforce numbers to our preschoolers.
- Count fruits, in the kitchen, look how many apples or oranges in the fruit bowl. Count objects around the house such as toys, cups or spoons.
- Go on a number hunt: look for numbers on your mailbox, on your door, and count the numbers on the remote control, on your keyboard.
- Count socks and put them in pairs.
- Look at the clock and the numbers.
- Bake the number-shaped cookies.
- Cut numbers from newspapers and magazines and have your child glue them. and make a cute book.
- Make numbers out of play-dough.
- Draw numbers on the sensory bin which has been filled with grains, flour or foam.
- Cut out numbers out of sandpaper for sensory play.
- Play bottle cap number games
- Play fishing for numbers
- Introduce numbers through nursery rhymes
- Stories with math concepts
- Lego math games: Sort Lego bricks by counting the dots
- Pasta patterned necklaces: Make pasta necklaces. Have your child string them creating a pattern and count the number of pastas that have been used.
- Dice games: play games such as Snakes and Ladders.
Happy counting.
