Little Learners Love Maths

Improving number sense in preschoolers lays a strong foundation for future mathematical success. Here are some effective and playful strategies to enhance number sense in young children:

  1. Counting Games:

    • Engage in counting games using everyday objects, such as toys, snacks, or fingers.
    • Count aloud during routine activities like climbing stairs, setting the table, or picking up toys.
  2. Number Recognition:

    • Introduce numbers in a fun and interactive way through games, songs, or even by drawing numbers with sidewalk chalk.
    • Create a number wall or poster with large, colourful numerals for visual reinforcement.
  3. Quantity Comparison:

    • Explore the concept of more and less by comparing quantities of objects.
    • Use terms like "greater than" and "less than" during play activities, such as arranging toy groups.
  4. Number Stories:

    • Introduce simple number stories or math-related picture books that involve counting and basic addition or subtraction.
    • Use storytelling to create scenarios where preschoolers can count or group items.
  5. Number Line Exploration:

    • Create a simple number line on paper or with physical objects like building blocks.
    • Use the number line to count, compare, and understand the concept of order.
  6. Mathematical Language:

    • Incorporate mathematical language into everyday conversations. Use terms like "more," "less," "equal," "add," and "subtract."
    • Play simple math games that involve verbal communication, such as "How many apples are in the basket?"
  7. Pattern Recognition:

    • Explore simple patterns with objects, colours, or shapes. For example, create an AB pattern with different-coloured blocks, spoons, pasta or leaves.
    • Encourage preschoolers to continue or replicate patterns using various materials.
  8. Sorting and Classifying:

    • Engage in sorting activities using everyday items like buttons, toys, or coloured objects.
    • Talk about the criteria for sorting, such as size, colour, or shape.
  9. Math Manipulatives:

    • Provide hands-on experiences with math manipulatives like counting bears, linking cubes, or pattern blocks.
    • Allow preschoolers to explore and play with these objects freely.
  10. Outdoor Math Activities:

    • Take advantage of outdoor play by incorporating math activities. Count flowers, rocks, or steps while exploring the environment. Use chalk to draw numbers, shapes, or simple math problems on the sidewalk.
      1. Math Games and Apps:

        • Introduce age-appropriate math games and apps designed for preschoolers.
        • Ensure that digital activities are interactive, engaging, and aligned with early math concepts.
      2. Role-Playing and Pretend Play:

        • Incorporate numbers into role-playing scenarios. For example, create a "store" where children can "buy" and "sell" items using play money.
        • Encourage counting and simple math operations during imaginative play.

Remember, the key is to make learning about numbers enjoyable and integrated into daily activities. By incorporating these strategies, you can nurture a positive attitude toward math and lay a solid foundation for future mathematical concepts.
